Example Bay Trip Outreach Emails

We’ve collected a few example outreach emails for anyone to learn from. These might be useful to provide inspiration for future outreach.

This email was sent to the CEO and founder of OKLO, a small company and recent YC alum. His company is prototyping a new type of nuclear reactor that could change energy permanently, so I wanted him to talk to us about how power/energy will change in the future.

Hi Jacob,

I'm a USC student and member of Spark SC, a student organization that cultivates entrepreneurship on campus and around LA. This fall, we are visiting the bay to meet with a number of impactful bay area companies and organizations to learn how we can have more meaningful careers.

I liked the talk you gave at The White House last fall, and it's clear you're really passionate about clean power and nuclear energy. I think my colleagues and I at Spark would benefit immensely from hearing about the future of energy from you. Do you have any availability on September 6 or 7 to give a ~1 hour talk to a group of passionate and ambitious students?

Thank you,

Landon Brand

This email was sent to the Director of Google For Entrepreneurship. Aside from creating entrepreneurial campuses and communities around the world, she runs a program called Silicon North Stars that takes a group of 8th graders in the upper Great Plains and teaches them skills that could one day help them run/work at a startup.

Hi Mary,

I'm a USC student and member of Spark SC, a student organization that cultivates entrepreneurship on campus. This fall, we are visiting a number of bay area companies and organizations that foster entrepreneurship to learn how we can be a more effective organization.

I love the work that you have done for Google for Entrepreneurs, and am especially inspired by Silicon North Stars- we actually have a similar initiative called project launch. I'm sure Spark could learn a lot from you, and we would love an opportunity to hear your thoughts on how to create entrepreneurial communities. Do you have any availability on September 6 or 7 to give a ~1 hour talk to a group of passionate and ambitious students?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Landon Brand

This email was sent to Kristen Quint, Executive Assistant to the CEO of 23andMe, Anne Wojcicki. No specific sentences were targeted toward Kristen specifically. Response came after the first follow-up, and Anne happened to be busy. Redirected to media team for inquiring about Robert Gentleman (head of biotech there).

Hi Kristen,

My name is Ankur Rastogi, and I'm a rising sophomore studying Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science at USC. On campus, I'm part of USC's student-led center for entrepreneurship and innovation, Spark SC, known for organizing campus-wide events attended by 2000+ students like Hack SC, the Startup Career Fair, and 1000 Pitches. Our team members have raised a $2 million funding round, created apps with over 26 million downloads, been a part of the Y Combinator Summer 2016 batch, and much more. You can view a more complete list of what we've all been up to here.

This fall, we're planning a trip to the Bay Area to visit companies and organizations on 9/6 and 9/7 to expose our students to the opportunities technology has to generate social impact. We've previously organized visits with Salesforce, Twitter, Uber, and Facebook. For this September, we've organized talks with Gokul Rajaram at Square and Tim Brady at Y Combinator, and we believe 23andMe's game-changing impact in creating accessible gene analysis would make it the perfect capstone company to our trip.

We'd love to have the opportunity to talk to Anne Wojcicki for an hour or so about how her initial vision has transformed into the company today. If she's not available, talking to Robert Gentleman about his work in computational biology would be fantastic, too. Let me know if this would work with either of their schedules!

Best,

Ankur
